Gora Onsen started in 1894 by drawing its water from the 'hell' of Soun, and developed into a proper hot spring resort following the opening of the mountain railway between Hakone-Yumoto and Gora in 1919. Today, the number of hot spring sources has grown to a whopping 46 and many ryokans have joined the Gora Onsen Ryokan Association. The "Hakone Gora Summer Festival Daimonji-yaki" is held in August every year, and a large bonfire in the shape of the kanji "dai" is lit on the mountain. It is one of the three biggest events in Hakone and people travel from all over the country to participate.
