Kawaura in Amakusa City flourished as a port town with Sakitsu Catholic Church in its center. Also known as "The Church of the Sea," the fishing port built around the church was, in 1996, selected as one of Japan's 100 Great Beaches, and was dubbed "Sakitsu, the Village of Christians." In 2001, the area was selected as one of Japan's 100 Best Atmosphere and Landscapes, and is also called (among many other names) "Kawaura Sakitsu Catholic Church and the Sea."
