It was said that the shrine was built in the 9th of September, year 806. The shrine consists of five main buildings: the main shrine, the corridor, middle hall, hall of worship, and tower gate. The existence of these buildings, which were said to have been built in between 1610-1618 through the initiative of Nagatsune Sagara, the first lord of Hitoyoshi, and Seibe, the Chief Retainer, led to the Shrine being designated as the first National Treasure in Kumamoto Prefecture. The thatched rooftop style of the tower gate exudes a presence with such power and glamour that was characteristic during the Momoyama period.
