Ishiyamadera Temple
- 石山寺
- Shiga & Lake Biwa
Ishiyamadera is well-known as the "Temple of Flowers" due to the blossoms that flourish all season at the foot of Garan mountains in the West Bank of the Seta River. It was said that Murasaki Shikibu came up with the idea for "The Tale of Genji" in the middle space in the main shrine, known as "The Room of Genji." There are many national treasures housed in the temple, including old structures such as the pagoda, east gate and the bell tower donated by Yoritomo Minamoto. Ishiyamadera is also considered as one of the 33 holy sites for the "Pilgrimage of 33 Temples Dedicated to Kannon," and worshippers visit the temple for this reason.
