Shiiba Village Tonegawa
This mountainous area has ties with samurai Nasu no Yoichi's younger brother Daihachiro, who visited it after receiving the life of the Heike (emperor). It is said that the land came to be called "Shiiba" after Daihachiro covered his cabin with the castanopsis ("shii" in Japanese) leaves ("ba"). The "Shiiba type" of houses as they have come to be known can be seen all throughout the area. Based on the legend, Daihachiro also fell in love and conceived a child with Princess Tsuruto.
