"Gion-san" is the nickname of the guardian God of East Kyoto, and was originally the name of this Shrine. The water flowing in the main hall is venerated by locals as the "water of power," and even now its power is highly revered by Maikos and cooks. One of Japan's biggest festivals, the "Gion Matsuri," is held here from July 1st to the 31st.
