Built in 1415, this temple has a history of being burned down and rebuilt repeatedly. The current main hall is the seventh, and it was built in 1928. It is famous as the site where Oda Nobunaga committed ritual suicide after setting fire to the temple, known as "The Incident at Honnoji.". Hideyoshi Toyotomi rebuilt the current temple after the fire. Treasures and artifacts connected to Nobunaga are stored and displayed within the temple, known as the "Daihouden," the temple museum of treasures.
