A small island with a span of about 20km and resting in between Okayama and Kagawa, it only has about 1000 population. Milking cows were introduced to the island early on, hence earning it the name "Island of Milk." Social welfare facilities were also built on the island due to the efforts of social activitist Toyohiko Kagawa, earning it another name, the "Island of Welfare." Today, because of the art museums around the island, namely: "Teshima Art Museum," "Les Archives du Coeur," and "Teshima Yokoo House," to name a few, it has also become known as the "Island of Art."
