Heijo Castle was the imperial residence of Heijo-kyo (currently Nara), and from 710 it remained as the center of Japanese politics and economy. The remains of the palace, all of which is designated as World Heritage Site, is over 1.1 square km, with an overhill of 300m to the east. They have also been designated as the "Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara." In the present, excavational surveillance is still being carried out, and the buildings and foundations are being restored based on the findings in the excavation. In 1998, the castle's main gate, the Suzaku gate, was restored along with the east gardens. In 2010 restoration of Imperial Greeting Hall (Daikokuden) was completed.
