Amanohashidate is one of the three famous scenic spots in Japan, the other two being Miyagi's Matsushima, and Hiroshima's Miyajima. The pine-covered sandbar which this place is famous for extends 3.6km; at the end of the sandbar, temples and parks can also be visited. One notable spot is the "Matanozoki," where you "peep between your knees," to see the view. The name "Amanohashidate" originates from the fact that the sandbar looks like a bridge ("hashi") from earth to heaven ("ama").
