One of the three mountains of Dewan (a domain between Akita and Yamagata) which includes Mount Gassan and Mount Yudono, Mount Haguro has a path of 2,446 stone steps leading to the summit. Along the way visitors will encounter a 1000-year-old cedar tree and lines of sugi trees which are designated with three stars by the Michelin Green Guide Japan. There are also a number of national treasures and a five-story pagoda. The stone steps and five-story pagoda are designated National Treasures.

35 minutes by bus from JR Uetsuhonsen-Tsuruoka Station, get off at Haguro Center, then walk 1 hour to the summit (If you get off at Haguro Summit, it is just a few minutes’ walk)
