Nanzenji is the most prestigious of all the Zen Buddhism temples in Japan. The Lake Biwa Canal Waterway Route, which passes through the vicinity of the temple, is a famous landscape in Kyoto, and has been used as setting for historical dramas.
The temple is also a famous sightseeing spot during the spring and fall for the gorgeous cherry blossoms and autumn leaves.
