Onomichi Senkoji Path
- 尾道千光寺新道
- Hiroshima & Miyajima
Onomichi is a town well-known for its sloping paths along which temples and shrines are lined up. From JR Onomichi Station to nearby Jikoji Temple, and then Kairyuji Temple in the east, the entire length is 2km, and the cobblestone path would take about 3 hours on foot. Because it is a mountain area and the houses and temples are hidden, the roads are narrow with many staircases. Houses are built on sloping surfaces, making it seem like their stone walls are piled up in layers. Old shops also line across the streets, and this area is often used as film location. Famous Japanese novelist Naoya Shiga also walked along the paths of the town. The whole area gives off a historic and romantic atmosphere.
