Known as the 5th largest freshwater lake in Hokkaido, repeated volcanic eruptions produced this miraculous landscape. The area is famous for the beautiful reflections of the mountains on the lake's surface, for the natural monument Marimo (an underwater plant), and also for the Wakasagi and Himemasu (fishes). In the winter, the surface of the water is completely frozen, and many people come here for ice fishing and snowmobile riding. During the "Lake Akan Ice Festival," midwinter fireworks can be enjoyed. In the summer, canoes or pleasure boats are available for those who wish to feel the rippling waves of the lake water up close.
