Basenkyo Gorge is located right where rock formations known as "Ogami-iwa" (God rock) and "Megami-iwa" (Goddess rock) rise along the Mabechi river. The Ogami-iwa and Megami-iwa are two of the most uniquely impressive rock formations within Japan. The beautiful landscape of Basenkyo was formed due to the erosion of the rocks over a long period of time. There is an observation deck on top of Ogami-iwa, where visitors can look over the majestic Basenkyo and its surroundings. The area is a designated natural park in the prefecture, and different sceneries can be enjoyed every season.
