The three facets of the 11 faces of Kannon are set in the main hall of the thatched roof of this temple in the god's honor. Sugimotodera Temple is the oldest temple in Kamakura, as well as the first refuge in the "Bando 33 Kannon Pilgrimage." Various Buddha statues are also worshipped here. Legend has it that when the temple was struck by fire, the god Kannon hid behind a big cedar tree, and for a time this tree became known as the "Tree of Kannon."
