Yajima and Kyojima Islands
- 矢島・経島
- Niigata
These are two small islands in the town of Ogi, connected by a vivid red arch bridge, and they are widely known for their picturesque view. "Yajima" means "Arrow Island," and the name originates from the arrow that Yorimasa Minamoto, a Japanese poet and warrior, was said to have used to exterminate the "Nue," a legendary Japanese monster. "Kyojima" means "Island of the Sutra," for it was said that Nichiro, a disciple of the monk Nichiren who was exiled, was shipwrecked on this island while travelling to announce that he has been forgiven. He recited the sutra overnight, and hence it became the name of the island. It is possible to explore around the two islands through the small boat "tarai-bune," which can be rented at the Experience Exchange Center.
