This temple was founded by the master of the Soto Zen Buddhism, Eihei Dogen, in 1244. It has an area of around 700 square meters and covered with dense cedar trees that are said to be 700 years old. There are around 70 structures and Buddha statues within the temple, and more than 200 Buddhist monks and nuns in residence. Visitors who have had prior Zen experience can make reservations in order to participate in the buddhist training. There are souvenir shops lined up 1 km along the town before the gates, where the famous sesame tofu and other delicacies may be purchased.
