With an altitude of 1,982 meters, it is the highest mountain in Shikoku, and also in west Japan. It is one of the "Seven Holy Mountains," along with Mount Kagahaku, Mount Tate, Mount Omine, Mount Shakagatake, Mount Fuji, and Mount Daisen. Saijo City is able to avoid typhoons due to this mountain's geographical location, hence it is also called "guardian god of Saijo City." One unique feature of the mountain is the several sets of heavy iron chains, "chain staircases" leading up to the summit.
