Ishidatami area in Uchiko Town
The Ishidatami District of Uchiko Town began in 1990 with the restoration of a water wheel and an old house built in the late Edo period and opened in 1994 as "Ishidatami no Yado" (stone-paved inn). Located 10 km upstream from Uchiko town on the Fumoto River, the area has a rural landscape of terraced rice paddies. The area has been selected as one of the "100 Best Rural Landscapes" by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries. The village started the "village scape preservation" project because old structures such as a stone weir remained in the Fumoto River. In the stone-paved clear stream garden created by local people, three water wheels are turning and rice is being milled. The upper reaches of the Fumoto River are also known for fireflies. A 30-minute walk from the park leads to Yuge Shrine, built in the Muromachi period (1336-1573).
