Chikugo River Lift Bridge
- 筑後川昇開橋
- Fukuoka & Hakata
The Chikugo River Lift Bridge was built in 1877 as a railway bridge for the old National Railway-Saga Line. It is about 507 meters long, and the pier is about 15-18 meters deep. Due to the tide difference and the inconsistency of the sea level of the Ariake sea, building the bridge was extremely difficult. Due to this, the bridge that was created was a movable one, 24 meters in length but rises to a 23-meter height. Because large-scale ships were frequent at the time in Chikugo river, priority was given to these companies instead of train passage. In August 2007, it was certified as a "Mechanical Engineering Heritage."
