Founded in 1687, this shrine, together with Fushimi Inari and Kasama Inari shrines, make up Japan's "Three Great Inari Shrines." It was built upon the request of Princess Kazanin Manko, wife of Lord Naotomo Nabeshima who ruled upon Hizen Kashima at the time. The main halls stands behind a stone wall; the gates and Kagura hall stands at the hem of the mountains. Main buildings such as the worship and prayer halls are beautifully covered in lacquer. This brilliant shine and spectacle earned it the name "Chinzei Nikko" (Sunlight in the West Sea). It is famous for the "Tamakusu" in the Spring Festival on April 8, and the "Ohitaki" in the Autumn Festival on December 8. Higashiyama Park near the outer area is also famous for its azalea blossoms.
