Hokokuji Temple was said to have been built to commemorate Takauji Ashikaga's grandfather. It was also said to have been built to commemorate Shigekane Uesugi. The temple's precints goes as far as 5 km to Mount Kinubari, where there is a long history with connections to both Ashikaga and Uesugi. The bamboo groves behind the main hall is well-known, and the pathways are being developed so that visitors can walk around it. Due to the magnificence of the bamboo forest, this temple is also called "Bamboo Temple."
