Shugakuin Imperial Villa
- 修学院離宮
- Kyoto
Shugakuin Imperial Villa, with its vast gardens and Mount Hiei as its landscape, was built by Emperor Gomizunoo in the 17th century. It consists of three parts: the upper, middle, and lower villa, and the masterful incorporation of the buildings to the landscape garden produces a harmonic scenery whose beauty truly stands out. In constructing the villa, it took around 15 years before this particular area was selected as the place where it should be built; its vast scale is overwhelming. Application to the Imperial Househould Agency needs to be done in advance before visiting.
