Daitokuji Temple
- 大徳寺
- Kyoto
Daitokuji is a temple of the Rinzai sect. Opened in 1315 during the Momoyama period, the succesive construction of its towers was paved way by Hideyoshi Toyotomi's take over after Nobunaga’s death. It consists of a number of towers and sub-temples. Notable is the "Yamamon," mountain gate, whose 2nd floor was expanded by Rikyu, and he also placed a statue of himself there. This angered Hideyoshi greatly, forcing Rikyu to commit ritual suicide. Within the precints of the temple, there are 2 sub-temples; in the top tower there are 22 sub-temples.
