Abe-no-Seimei was a famous astronomer and "Onmyoji" (practicer of the "onmyo" arts) during the Heian Period, and this shrine was built to commemorate him. It is located in site of Abe-no-Seimei's house, built in 1007 upon Emperor Ichijo's instructions. Within the precints of the shrine are the "Seimei well," said to contain water that can heal diseases, and the restored bridge (the old Ichijo Modoribashi), below which Seimei hid his "shikigami." In addition, the pentagram which was the mark of a curse-removing amulet in Onmyodo arts is embossed at the front of the main shrine and torii gates, and serves as the shrine's symbol.
