Misasa Onsen (Hot Springs)

The water from this onsen village springs at the foot of Mount Mitoku and has one of the highest concentration of radon in the world. Its origins date back to more than 850 years ago. It is well-known as a long-term stay hot springs for healing, and there is also a national hospital and hot spring research institutes. Visitors can expect the "radiation hormesis effect" brought about by the radon, which is good to inhale and to drink, and was said to boost immunity and enhance the body's natural healing properties. On both banks of Mitoku River, there are more than 20 hotels, ryokans, minjukus, 2 common bath houses and 3 foot baths. In addition, there is a cooperative open-air bath under the Misasa Bridge, the "Kawahara Bath," constructed out of blue granite. Here, guests can relax in the water while listening to the sounds of the river and the fishes.
