Jigokunuma Pond (Hell Pond)
Water from the nearby hot spring gathers around this volcano explosion crater, nicknamed “Jigoku” (“Hell” in Japanese) due to its distinctive sulfuric smell. There are a number of volcanically active craters around this bare and rocky area, which is increasing in size year-by-year. Although the lovely warm waters can be enjoyed here year-round, the middle of the swamp can reach temperatures of over 90 degrees. This part is strictly off limits. The area is also magnificently beautiful during the fall.
