Enoshima Shrine is one of Japans three major shrines enshrining Benzaiten. The history of these shrines begins as far back as the year 552, when the three shrines also enshrined one of the three sister goddesses – Okutsumiya, Nakatsumiya and Hetsumiya. Visitors worshipped the God of Battle here during the Kamakura era (1185-1333), while during the more peaceful Edo era (1603-1868), visitors tended to worship the Gods of Intelligence, Music and Performing Arts. Today, lots of visitors come here to worship the God of Sea and Water, the God of Wealth and Happiness, and the God of Self-Improvement, all of whom are believed to be enshrined here.
