Muroji Temple is an old temple built among the lush greenery of Mt. Muro, also commonly know as “Nyonin Koya”. It was founded by a monk from Kofukuji Temple during the Hoki period of the Nara era (770-781), and put together by his disciple, Shuen. Muroji Temple consists of “Kondo Hall” – a national treasure in itself – where a Daibutsu (giant Buddha) is situated. Outside stands the smallest five-storey pagoda in Japan, as well as Mirokudo Hall, among other buildings. Although the temple is mainly of the Shingon Sect of Buddhism, it was also highly influenced by the Hosso Sect and Tendai Sect. This troublesome past meant that the temple had to reform itself each time depending on which Sect it was influenced by at the time. Various Buddhist works of art are also stored here.
