Nagaoka Kuroda maintained Akizuki Castle since his entry into the building in 1624. It was originally Naoyuki Kuroda’s place of residence, where he lived for 10-years before his death. The thing that set this castle apart from the rest was the fact that the front and back palaces were divided, thus creating only two points of exit and entry as the rear of the castle was securely protected by a natural fortress – the mountains. The castle ruins are now designated as a Historical Site by Fukuoka Prefecture. The wooden building of Akizuki Junior High School blends nicely into the environment on one section of the ruins. A lot of visitors descend on the area during fall to see the autumnal colors.
