Nanzoin Temple
- 南蔵院
- Fukuoka & Hakata
The bronze statue of the Reclining Buddha at Nanzoin Temple reaches a length of 41m and a height of 11m. While this temple is the head of the Koyasan Sect, it is also recognized as a special temple for the Koyasan Shingon Sect. These days over 1.3 million people visit this famous temple every day, but it was once ordered to be demolished during the anti-Buddhist movement at the beginning of the Meiji era (1868-1912). Thankfully, it somehow managed to survive this order through the endearing petitions of the local residents. The enthusiasm of the chief priest has also made it one of Japan’s “Three Daishin Shikoku Sacred Sites”. The Reclining Buddha installation was a gift from the Myanmar Buddhist Association as a way of thanks for the continuous contributions by Nanzoin Temple.
