The legal wife of Hideyoshi Toyotomi, Mandokoro Kitano, built this temple to mourn her husband and pray for his happiness in his next life. Kodaiji Temple boasts an abundance of important cultural assets, such as the front gate, Kaisando Hall, the mausoleum, and the tea rooms. The maki-e pattern of “Jumidan” inside the mausoleum is particularly famous as “Kodaiji Maki-e”. Kodaiji Temple also boasts two Japanese-style gardens with a pond at the center, created by none other than Enshu Kobori. These historical gardens have been designated as an important national historical and scenic spot.
