Mitarai Pond, Kashima Shrine
The head shrine of Kashima Shrine is also known as the oldest shrine in the Kanto region. It is a exceptional place full of history and pedigree, and is one of only 3 “Shingu” (Shinto shrine) – with the other 2 being Ise Shrine and Katori Shrine. 400,000 liters of fresh spring water flow daily in the Mitarai Pond inside the temple grounds. The water is so clear that visitors can easily see the bottom of the pond.
